Charles and Ardith Westie Collection, 1938-c. 2010; 1941-1955.

The Charles and Ardith Westie Collection spans 1938-circa 2010. Of special interest are letters from World War II. Charles participated in the Normandy campaign, was wounded in July 1944 and then spent the remainder of his service in military hospitals. During this time, Ardith raised their daughter alone. Living in Lansing, Michigan, she worked as a staff writer for the Michigan Education Association. The Westies maintained a prolific two-way correspondence, which has been preserved within the collection. Also documented are the couple's pre-war courtship and marriage and the birth of their first child. Post-war materials document Charles' time as a sociology doctoral student at Ohio State University and as an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Director of Research, Continuing Education Service at Michigan State University. Includes copies of his 1953 dissertation, "Reactions of Railroad Workers to a Major Technological Change" and other research papers.
